Presentation: National Engineers Week will be celebrated February 14-20, 2010. Once again, The IEEE Central Indiana Section (www.cis-ieee.org) and Indiana Council of Engineering Societies (ICES - www.in-ces.org) is teaming up with The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, (www.childrensmuseum.org) to increase public awareness about Engineering and to help young students consider Engineering as a career option.
Activities will be held at The Children's Museum on Saturday, February 13th, from 10:00 - 3:00 pm. Several engineering exhibits will be set-up throughout the museum. Each station will tie an engineering discipline in with that exhibit. There will be "hands on" items at the stations as well. Volunteers from local engineering groups will be there to talk with visitors, answer any questions about engineering, hand out materials and to validate visitor's cards. Visitors to the museum will be given a "schematic" upon entering the museum, and after successfully visiting all of our engineering stations, and turning in their cards, they'll be eligible for prizes to be given away through a drawing at 3:00 pm that day.
RSVP: Please contact Alan Schmidt via aschmidt at idem.in.gov or by phone at (317) 233-5190, if you have any questions. Feel free to stop by our exhibit. Volunteers must have already completed a Children's Museum Volunteer Form to participate.
From the Chairman …
The Indianapolis Section of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) will be participating in the CIS-IEEE National Engineers Children's Day at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis on February 13, 2010. Our activity will have a puzzle game where the children can read a clue, see pictures of a chemical engineering practice/activity and match them with a chemical element. Also, a chemical periodic table will be on display and two zip-up posters from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) will show industrial scenes for background. Attention will be given to industrial operations within the state. This is a great opportunity to showcase some of the Indiana's manufacturing capabilities and products to future engineers, scientists, and citizens. This event will take the place of our Local Section Meeting for February.
The January Local Section Meeting was held with the Scientech Club. Dr. William Dick gave a presentation on the history of kidney dialysis. Pioneering work beginning in 1827 and ongoing milestone developments by many researchers perhaps have made dialysis as the medical field with the fastest technological advances of all medical discoveries in the past 400 years. This would have not been possible without the help of many engineers, who designed many pieces of equipment in the story. The originally planned presentation by IUPUI Chancellor Charles Bantz on higher education in science and engineering was rescheduled for a later date.
If you have any questions, or if you have suggestions for plant tours or guest speakers for future AIChE meetings, please contact me via e-mail at tleas at idem.in.gov or by phone at (317) 234-4051. The Rose-Hulman Student Chapter would like to arrange a joint meeting with us at a later date. Also, others have expressed interest in joining the Indianapolis Section of AIChE.
Thanks for your support.
