Please contact your Chairman on your ability to volunteer to help on Saturday, February 26, 10 AM to 3 PM at the Children’s museum for Engineer’s Day. A children’s activity of matching photographs of Indiana industrial activity with descriptions and an experiment on the viscoelastic properties of Silly Putty is anticipated. Other suggestions are welcome, although there are museum limitations on exposure to any dangerous chemicals. The Children’s Museum has free parking in the ramp on the west side of Illinois street just north of 30th street in Indianapolis. The Museum prefers that volunteers complete an information form that is available from your chairman.
The tour and presentation arranged by Caroline Karanja at Organic Power Solutions (OPS) on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 was well attended. OPS has innovations in pyrolytic technology to achieve renewable energy in the form of pyrochar, pyro-oil and pyro-gas from client waste streams such as agricultural waste, auto shredder residue, auto tires, municipal solid waste, plastics and oil sludge. John Bales of OPS described and demonstrated the characterization work the company does for client waste streams. Good conversations followed at John’s Famous Stew. The contact at OPS was Caroline Karanja.

Our local AIChE Vice-Chairman, Jonathan Adams, moved out of state earlier this year, so your Chairman is actively entertaining volunteers expressing interest to fill the position. The Vice-chairman is a member of the local executive committee, helps along with other members on chapter activities, and could shift to the chairman position for June 2011 to 2012. If you are intimidated noting all the national AIChE information that is assembled for the Distillates newsletter, our very capable newsletter editor, Kevin Keating, handles that and it is not a duty for the Vice-Chairman or Chairman.
If you have a suggestion for a speaker or a tour possibility in 2011 please contact your Chairman. A tour, presentation or activity is expected in March or April and election of officers at a dinner meeting in May.
