From the Chairman …
AIChE will be joining the local American Chemical Society meeting on Tuesday evening, March 15 at 7 PM for our March meeting. It is an opportunity to network with others in the chemical field while hearing an interesting presentation. Reservations are not needed but you could let you chairman know if you are planning to come so we know who to look for at alan.schmidt at att.net Before the meeting, the campus cafeteria just southeast of Lilly Science Hall has a fine selection of food for $7 or there are burger places there also.

The University of Indianapolis campus is southeast of downtown Indianapolis on the northeast corner of Shelby St. and Hanna Avenue. From downtown it is good to take Madison south, turn left on Southern, turn right on Shelby St. and the campus is south on Shelby on the left side. Visitor parking is on the west side of campus as you enter the campus. Lilly Science Hall is near the center of campus on the northeast side of the large oval grassy area in the center of campus.
Indianapolis Section of AIChE Officer elections will be coming up in May. Openings for Vice-Chairman and Chairman are open and need to be filled by volunteers. Please let your current Chairman know of your interest to fill these positions.
The February 26 Engineer's day at the Children's Museum was well attended by children with 456 stopping at the AIChE table for a presentation on the history, chemistry, and viscoelastic properties of Silly Putty, including their personal demonstration of viscoelastic properties. Your dutiful Chairman and Past-Chairman, Dr. Alan Schmidt and Tom Leas manned the table from 10 AM to 3 PM and could have used some additional help.
Our local AIChE Vice-Chairman, Jonathan Adams, moved out of state earlier this year, so you’re Chairman is actively entertaining volunteers expressing interest to fill the position. The Vice-chairman is a member of the local executive committee, helps along with other members on chapter activities, and could shift to the chairman position for June 2011 to 2012. If you are intimidated noting all the national AIChE information that is assembled for the Distillates newsletter, our very capable newsletter editor, Kevin Keating, handles that and it is not a duty for the Vice-Chairman or Chairman.
If you have a suggestion for a speaker or a tour possibility in 2011 please contact your Chairman. A tour, presentation or activity is expected in March or April and election of officers at a dinner meeting in May.
