From the Past Chairman….
Thank you for your interest and continued support in the Indianapolis Section of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Focused outcomes from our activities include the following:
The Distillate Newsletter and website updates are important for membership outreach. We are continuing to develop a membership profile summary that can help us better plan for future activities and determine membership growth. Additional efforts will involve participation in the newly created Indiana Council of Engineering Societies (ICES).
Relations with AIChE have been helpful with regard to technology presentations, networking, and other support. Members from the local section have attended the Annual Meeting, Spring Meeting, Leadership Development Conference, and Chicago Symposium. In addition, we received a ProjectConnect grant for $200 to help fund activities with the Purdue Student Chapter. Future support may include a getting a speaker from the AIChE Speakers Academy for an upcoming meeting.
Monthly Meetings have local content and serve to promote the chemical engineering profession, members, and scientific community. We attended tours at Interstate Castings and IU Emerging Technology Center; shared our engineering experiences with Purdue chemical engineering students; and demonstrated to young kids at our Chemistry Week Children’s Museum display some examples of chemistry connections in daily activities plus promoted good habits for environmental stewardship at home. Another activity including having dinner together and hearing about the “Big Dig” in Indianapolis to reduce the combined sewer overflow.
An award was given at our Annual Meeting. Daniel Harper received a Certificate of Recognition for leadership and diligence as the Vice Chairman, Chairman, and Past Chairman positions, which he has fulfilled for 2004 through 2007. In addition, we plan to help support the nomination process for local members who are eligible for AIChE Fellow membership status.
It has been a pleasure to be your Chairman for 2006/2007.

From the Chairman….
I appreciate your support in being elected Chairman of the Indianapolis Section of AIChE at our May 22, 2007 AIChE meeting. John Elliott was elected to continue as Secretary/ Treasurer. Tom Leas now has the position of being the past chairman. We all appreciate the program of activities and meetings that Tom helped arrange, his words of wisdom, and leadership during his AIChE Chairmanship.
We need a person to volunteer for Vice chairman of the local AIChE section. The person in the position typically helps the chairman in arranging local meetings and taking reservations and then runs for chairman in the following year. This is an opportunity for you to contribute to the local AIChE organization which forms a part of the national AIChE, which arranges national conferences, the annual meeting, training, Chemical and Engineering Progress magazine, and which provides an overall support network for your individual chemical engineering work. Please contact me if you are interested in being the Vice-chairman of our local AIChE section.
We have a valuable continuing support team including Chris Burcham, Roster/membership; Karl Schnelle, Webmaster; Becky Smith Student chapter adviser, public relations; and Kevin Keating newsletter editor. Their support is greatly appreciated and critical.
We will have a joint meeting with ACS June 12, a get together and networking dinner meeting in September, speakers, plant tours, chemical engineering activities, and joint meetings in the coming year. Please remember to include the local dues with your national AIChE membership dues payment by the end of the year.

Any exceptions are noted in the calendar listing below.
Following are the meetings
scheduled for the near future:
Monday June 18 – A GIS Atlas for Indiana – Nathan Eaton
Since 1837, geologists have been mapping Indiana's geological resources. For most of the past 170 years, those maps were created on paper and distributed through the publication sales office of the Indiana Geological Survey. In the past 10 years, the IGS has transitioned from pen and ink mapping techniques to computerized mapping applications called geographic information systems. This talk will discuss our online mapping site called the Indiana IGS Atlas, which currently provides more than 200 layers of information related to Indiana's geography, geology, environment, demographics, and infrastructure.
Monday June 25 – Diagnosis,
Etiology, and Treatment of Autism –
Dr. Craig Erickson
This talk will discuss the diagnosis, etiology, and treatment of autism and related disorders with emphasis on what has been learned about the disorder over the last 20 years, a time period in which the apparent prevalence of autism and related disorders has significantly increased.
For further details contact Dr. Alan Schmidt at (317) 233-5190 or 865-3545. For later Monday programs check the Scientech calendar at www.scientechclub.org
