From the Chairman …
We will lead off our 2007/2008 year programming with a networking and planning meeting on Tuesday, September 18, 2007. The dinner meeting will be at Best Taste Chinese Restaurant off Indiana Avenue. If you are going northwest on Indiana avenue from downtown Indianapolis, just before University Avenue you turn right just after some businesses, go around to the right in the back. The address is 917 Indiana Avenue but you cannot see it from Indiana Avenue. Those planning to attend could RSVP to me at 233-5190 with name, company, and telephone number to be put on a meeting networking list. Last minute decision attendees are welcome also, it is a buffet. The schedule is to arrive, eat, and converse from 5:30 PM to 6 PM; at 6 PM I will give a seven minute humorous speech with props on getting through airport security which has taken a first at the second level of toastmaster competition; this will be followed by discussion and planning on future meeting topics, activities, and locations. The $7.45 meal cost will be reimbursed for local AIChE members.
If members have a room available in the evening for some of our future meetings, a presentation they would like to give or hear, or a company that can be toured, please let me know.
We are still seeking a volunteer to be the local AIChE Vice-Chairman. The Vice-Chairman helps the Chairman with programming and other activities and is in the progression to become the Chairman the following year.
I attended the June AIChE Leadership Development Conference in Boston. The national AIChE website www.aiche.org has been updated and includes an excellent searchable Knovel eLibrary physical properties database and Web ex web hosting capability. There were opportunities to interact with the national AIChE staff, such as Executive director, John Sofranko, President elect, Dale Keairns, and others. James C. Cross III was the chair from the AIChE Boston local section. There were informative and motivating sessions on group dynamics and team building, communications, goal setting, delegating, and presentations on the upcoming 100 year celebration of chemical engineering.
There are Scientech luncheon presentations on Mondays for people interested in science and engineering at the Children’s Museum. There is a $9 buffet from 11:30 to noon followed by a presentation by typically experts in the field, concluding at 1 PM. Further details are at www.scientechclub.org They have a special evening presentation September 14 by Daniel F. Evans, Jr., CEO of Clarian Health, speaking on Health Care Costs—Why Do They Keep Rising? The social starts at 5:30 PM, $25/ person for the dinner. RSVP to Victor Wenning 317 576-0922

Scientech meetings are held nearly every Monday at the Children’s Museum. They begin at 11:30 am with a buffet luncheon ($9.00). Announcements and introductions are at noon, followed by the presentation which continues to 1 pm. Some meetings may be replaced with a tour of some place of interest, usually on a major holiday. Any exceptions are noted in the calendar listing below.
Following are the meetings
scheduled for the near future:
Monday, September 17 - What Does "Statistically Significant" Mean? - Tom Spradlin
Many articles, especially reports on health research, inform us that some result was or was not "statistically significant". Rarely do these articles tell us what that means. This talk will use simple examples to show what these authors are trying to tell us and how we should interpret these statements.
Monday, September 24 - Recent Changes in US Patent Law - Robert Titus
The US Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the US Congress has had a significant impact on US patent law over the past two years. Some of these changes and their potential impact on exclusivity and innovation will be discussed.
Future Talks;
October 1 - Stem
Cell Research
October 8 - Joint
Strike Fighter
October 15 - Tour
of Oswald Mineral, Fossil, and Gem Collection
October 22 - Future
of Nuclear Energy
