From the Chairman …
The March 17 AIChE joint meeting with the Purdue University student chapter was a fulfilling experience. You’re Chairman, Dr. Alan Dale Schmidt; Mike Wertz your Vice Chairman, and Steve Leeper, from Tippecanoe Labs gave pointers and insights from their college years and from their chemical engineering careers to the undergraduate chemical engineering students.
The Indianapolis Section of AIChE, Tuesday, April 29, 2008 activity will be a discussion and dinner at the New China Buffet, 4720 W. 38 th street starting with food at 5:30PM. The restaurant is west of Michigan Avenue on the north side of 38 th street in a mall, 317 388-8833. The buffet has an extensive selection of main courses including seafood, tasty mango slices, and many selections.
Your chairman will discuss factors and chemical pathways for health and longevity based on 57 references collected over the last year mainly from recent news articles and the www.sciencedaily.com web site. I will present four factors that can increase your lifespan 14 years based on a study of 20,000 people. Topics include weight, exercise, cancer, heart, diabetes, Alzheimer's, smoking, nutrition, and pollution. Food will be interspersed with discussions. Please RSVP to Dr. Alan Dale Schmidt, 317 233-5190 or aschmidt at idem.in.gov so that I can have the right number of handouts, but just show up if you decide it fits in at the time. The dinner expense will be reimbursed by the local chapter.
Additional comments…..
The Indiana Council of Engineering Societies (ICES) is planning a poster session, dinner, and significant speaker, perhaps Senator Lugar, for Friday evening October 17 at the downtown Indianapolis Marriott. It would be an opportunity to eat and network with other engineers. The cost would be about $50 to $55 a person. A level of interest is needed at this time. Would you please respond to your Chairman if you think you would attend such an event?

Future Talks
·
April
14 - Technical & Biological
Features of CT Scanning - Dr. Jonas Rydberg
April 21 - Identity Theft - Fred Cate -
Politicians and journalists frequently refer to identity theft as "the
nation's fastest growing crime," despite consistent evidence that identity
theft has declined over
the past five years. Why is identity theft so misunderstood, what is really
going on, and what can you do to protect yourself?
· April 28 - Green Method to Remove CO2, Clean the Environment, and Make Biofuel - Nelson Shaffer (member) - Society is concerned about CO2 emissions from many sources. An innovative technique that uses algae can remove CO2 from plants while generating biofuel, oxygen, and a protein-rich residue. Algal methods offer a number of advantages and are under very active development. The method could be very useful in Indiana and other midwestern states. Several pilot plants are working now and there is great promise for the future.
· May 5 - Visual Translation of Music - Ken Lemons - This software allows people to "see" music and also "see" the quality of the music. The ability to combine the visual sense and the hearing sense opens many doors in the world of music instruction. It also provides a visual way to tune a musical instrument without the ability to hear well.
