From the Chairman …
The March, Indianapolis Section of AIChE chapter activity
will be a discussion of chemical engineering careers at the Purdue University
student AIChE chapter on Monday, March 17, 2008, from 6 PM to 8 PM at Forney
Hall of Chemical Engineering in West Lafayette. There are currently two
chemical engineers planning to go, Dr. Alan Dale Schmidt, Chairman and Mike
Wertz, our Vice-Chairman. If others are willing to join us please let
your Chairman know.
There are other activities that may be of interest: A science cafe in Bloomington is coming up Thursday March 6 in Bloomington www.sciencecafebloomington.org
size matters: sex differences in brains and behavior. There is an
American Chemical Society meeting that we can join on coal refining the evening
of March 19 and a Mensa tour of the Kokomo Opalescent Glass Factory (KOG) in Kokomo Friday morning March 28. There is a tour of a waste water treatment facility
with the Scientech group on March 31, www.scientechclub.org. The regional
science fair and Scientech needs judges March 18 and March 20 from about 10:30
to 4 PM at the state fair ground. There is a free car and hiking day tour
of the amazing Lost River with swallow holes, caves, and a gulf roiling
up in a collapsed sink hole valley on Saturday, March 29, starting with a
hydrology and geology description at 7:40 AM at the town square in Orleans,
Indiana about 2.5 hours south of Indianapolis on 37. An earlier Lost River article can be found at: http://hoosier.sierraclub.org/Sierran/05-3/lost.asp . If
interested in further details contact your Chairman, Dr. Alan Dale Schmidt, 317
233-5190, aschmidt at idem.in.gov.
There was a fine presentation given by Dr. Gerald Jakubowski, the new President
of Rose Hulman Institute of Technology, on February 11, about the Future of
Engineering and Engineering Education. Engineering was originally
designed for the military. Earlier trial and error engineering methods
were replaced from 1950 to 2000 with more scientific methods. The future
for the engineer is becoming increasingly complex. Interdisciplinary
engineering involves engineers of different engineering disciplines working
cooperatively on a single project or projects as a cohesive group.
Your Chairman, Dr. Alan Dale Schmidt and past Chairman, Tom Leas, helped foster
science and engineering interest on February 16 at the Children's Museum as 300
inquisitive children stopped at the AIChE booth over a five hour period.
The event was hosted and mainly manned by IEEE with coordination from the
Indiana Council of Engineering Societies (ICES).
