Tour |
The company has a permit from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) to process infectious waste. State regulations require that infectious waste, such as from hospitals, be effectively treated before it is disposed in a landfill. Sanitec has large units to effectively treat infectious waste using microwave energy, before the waste is landfilled. The processing units are currently being installed in an existing building. It is a good time to see the equipment and the overall process, before any infectious waste processing is being done. Karl Niemiec, Director of Midwest Operations, (317) 379-5716 at Sanitec of Indiana will be providing a plant tour. Manufacturing, technical updates, and recycling breakthroughs will be discussed along with brochures and links to on-line videos of the process. |

Completion of tour |
Please RSVP: Room on the tour is flexible, but please give a call beforehand to your local AIChE Vice-Chairman, Dr. Alan Schmidt, at 317 233-5190 so we know if everyone planning to come has arrived. Additional engineers from Scientech may join us.
Price: No cost for local members.
We have a great lineup of AIChE activities planned for October and November. Beginning with a plant tour at Sanitec of Indiana on October 20 (see meeting announcement), followed with a luncheon presentation on November 2, and a community outreach activity on November 7. Additional details for the November meetings are listed below:
· Kenneth Bosar PE, Vice President of Powers Energy of America, Inc. will give a presentation about municipal solid waste gasification and conversion to ethanol on Monday, NOVEMBER 2 at the Scientech/AIChE luncheon meeting. The company recently announced plans to construct a $285 million plant in Schneider, Indiana. The meeting will be held at noon at the Northside Knights of Columbus just west of Keystone on 71st Street. Click HERE for further details on the location. There is no cost to attend. However, if possible, go to the luncheon buffet for conversation before the meeting. The buffet begins at 11:15am and costs $10.00 (or $2.00 for beverages only), payable at the door.
· The local AIChE section will be having a table/booth on Saturday, NOVEMBER 7 from 9am to 3pm at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis as one of the organizations invited to participate in the National Chemistry Week 2009 activities by the Indiana Section of the American Chemical Society. This year's theme is: "Chemistry- It's Elemental." The event offers hands-on chemistry activities appropriate for children under 14 years old and their families. We will be having a match game where the children can read a clue, see pictures, and/or objects and match them with a chemical engineering practice or chemical element. One of the groupings would be to have a laminated picture of raw resources that would match with a laminated picture of finished products from industrial operations. We need examples of pictures or questions for the game that could be representative of your workplace. These must be compiled and made ready by November 7. This is a great opportunity to showcase some of the Indiana’s manufacturing capabilities and products to future engineers, scientists, and citizens. Also, booth volunteers get a free t-shirt for participating. Let me know by October 23 if you can volunteer for 2 hours to help out. Last year, we had more that 300 kids stop by our table for doing the Silly Putty Pull experiment.
Hope to see you then. As mentioned, we need volunteers and your support for the Chemistry Week activity. Feel free to call me at (317) 234-4051 if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Thomas E. Leas PE
Chairman, Indianapolis Section of AIChE
